From Amabie with Love
Saturday at Sakuranomiyasaka College of Music, none of the departments were holding classes; however, the rental practice rooms were operating as usual, which was important for students who couldn’t play their instruments (or sing) at home. Some of the school’s orchestras large and small, as well as trios, quartets, and other chamber music groups, were rehearsing here and there, too.
The oppressive rainy season of June hadn’t yet begun—it was a nice, sunny May day. It’s human nature to want to practice outside under the blue sky (technically under an overhang, since direct sunlight is the enemy) instead of indoors.
“Komazawa sent you this picture on purpose?” Takumi Hayama asked as he peered at the phone in Masataka Nozawa’s hand. The key words were on purpose. Why a bird-headed sea monster?
“Yeah. It wards off evil spirits—no, awful sickness, maybe? Well, either way.”
For how sensitive he appeared, he could sure miss the point, so the response was very Masataka. Komazawa must have been thinking of him if he sent it
Well, they had been going out since high school, so Komazawa had to have some idea how his boyfriend would react and was probably used to letting this sort of thing go. Masataka sure was a realist, though, despite looking like a romantic and ending up with a romantic boyfriend. Takumi became close friends with him during high school, and now they were rivals in college.
“Oh, Gii would probably like this,” said Masataka.
“You’re right!” Takumi nodded emphatically. He got the data and immediately sent it to him.
Gii—Giichi Saki—had already graduated from a world-class university when Takumi and the others were starting high school, but he had hid that fact and pretended to be a normal (?) high-schooler. He had brains, looks, and even came from an elite family. He was different in all sorts of ways that amounted to night and day from Takumi, whose background was far more ordinary, but Gii didn’t worry about any of that and made for a laid-back boyfriend.
Gii was a busy guy, but for once the response came immediately.
[[Takumi, you said, “It’s Ama
“What?! It’s Amabie, not Amaebi?!” Takumi blushed furiously at his mistake, and another message arrived from Gii. It was a photo of a gorgeous, healthy-looking
For a while after that, the wallpaper on Takumi’s phone was that shrimp picture, the heartwarming outcome of his delight at receiving it from his boyfriend.
